Electric powertrains have seen some tremendous advancements over the last decade or so. While models like the Honda Insight and GM EV1 helped to popularize the proton-powered segment, they also gave electric cars something of a reputation for being pretty underwhelming in the performance department. In recent year’s that perception has changed, however, as abundantly evidenced by the newly released Aspark Owl, the world’s fastest battery-powered hypercar.

At the heart of the Owl are four permanent magnet synchronous motors drawing from a 1,300kW Lithium-Ion battery pack. Together the power plant puts down a mind-blowing 2,012hp and 1,475ft-lbs of torque — all of which is instantly on tap. At less than 4,200lbs at the curb — a figure made possible partially thanks to the Owl’s full carbon fiber monocoque chassis and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer bodywork — the Japanese hypercar can achieve 0-60mph times of just 1.69 seconds. That’s more than 40% quicker than a Bugatti Veyron 16, Audi R8 V10 Plus, or Lamborghini Huracán Performante. It’s nimble weight (and impressive drag coefficient) also enables the Owl to offer a 280-mile range and a top speed of almost 250mph. Aspark will be churning out just 50 specimens in total, each of which will cost a cool $3,196,400.
